Anemonid

The anemonid (Na'vi name: fngapsutxwll meaning "metal-following plant") is one of several carnivorous plants on Pandora that obtains most of its nutrition from other organisms rather than making its own through photosynthesis. The large, flattened meristem at the top of the plant is covered with a sticky, aromatic substance that attracts insects, which are quickly trapped once they land. Digestive enzymes on the plant's surface then break down the insect bodies to obtain nitrogen and other essential elements.

The anemonid is rather unique in another feature -- its roots absorb metals (including unobtanium) from the soil rather than the typical mineral elements needed for plant growth. This gives the plant the ability to move in response to a magnetic field, which was named magnetonasty by the first scientists who studied this behavior. The anemonids will turn and lean toward anyone walking by carrying a metal object.

Research is under way on earth to determine whether anemonids could be used in bio remediation to detoxify soil contaminated with heavy metals, or possibly as a tool for mining. Results have so far been inconclusive.

Anemonids appear in the first film shortly after the woodsprites land on Jake Sully and he plays with them.
They have a very different appearance in Avatar: The Game and James Cameron's Avatar: An Activist Survival Guide. Their appearance was updated in the book The World of Avatar: A Visual Exploration to match the first film, while Avatar: The Game is no longer considered canon.
- Lichens from Avatar: The Game share the same appearance, suggesting that lichens have been retconned to become anemonids. This is supported by the "Pandora Survival Guide".
- However, the mist shade fungus from Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora also shares a very similar appearance with the anemonid, save for the color, yet the fungus has a different name. Frontiers of Pandora is considered canon.
