Avatar 2 is a planned sequel to the 2009 film Avatar. The film has been mentioned by producer James Cameron, who will also be the director.[3] Cameron has already confirmed the sequel [4], which will be shot before Battle Angel. [5]

PlotEdit

"I've had a storyline in mind from the start - there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel," Cameron said. "It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters - that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It'd be a waste not to use it again."

Cameron has said in a statement to THR: "In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of Avatar's visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."[6]

Cameron has also hinted that the heroes will venture to some of Polyphemus's other moons in the film. He also confirmed that Avatar 2 will explore the Na'vi culture more than Avatar.

On April 20, 2010 Cameron confirmed that Avatar 2 will explore the oceans of Pandora. He also confirmed that Avatar 2 will contain more volcanoes, when prompted by an interviewer.[7] Three days later, it was confirmed that Avatar 2 will take place several years after the events of the original film. [8]

ProductionEdit

Before the original film was released, James Cameron talked about turning Avatar into a trilogy of films that would follow for sure Neytiri and later after the film's release Jake Sully as well. Not long after, James Cameron announced that he is in the process of working on the film. The director also went on to say that the film will most likely not be called "Avatar 2", since Jake is no longer an avatar at the end of the first movie, but rather a Na'vi. [9] He claims that he plans to once again do the impossible by having a much shorter production time, and for the sequel to be much cheaper than the original. Avatar 2 may be shot in a higher frame rate than the original, which is shot at 24 fps. The sequel may be shot at 48 fps, 60 fps or an even higher frame rate.[10]

James Cameron also confirmed that the sequels would be filmed back-to-back: “I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now. We are planning to shoot them together and [edit them in post-production] together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart.” [11] Sigourney Weaver, who recently also dropped hints about a return for her character after a tragic death in the first film, stated that Cameron will begin filming on the second Avatar film next year, and will film the second and third films back-to-back.[12]

CastEdit

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have signed for a trilogy. [15] It is rumored that Giovanni Ribisi will return as Parker Selfridge. It is also rumored that Stephen Lang will return as Quaritch, though he was killed in the end of Avatar. [16] In an interview, Lang discussed the possibility of a return, saying "It's not over while I've still got DNA" hinting towards a possible resurrection of Quaritch.[17] Recently it has been confirmed that Joel David Moore will return as Norm Spellman.[18] At the Golden Globes, Sigourney Weaver hinted at the return of her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, in some form, saying, "If you look at the footage, I don't really... I go somewhere, right? It's science fiction. Anything can happen." [19] The actress later confirmed that she and Cameron had agreed to bring Grace back, commenting, "I'm actually in the tree. I can't promise anything, but I think James Cameron wants to bring the family together", referring to Grace, Jake, Norm, and the other humans that stayed on Pandora or helped the Na'vi. [20] On April 20, 2010 CCH Pounder confirmed that she would return as the Omaticaya Tsahìk Mo'at.[21] Michelle Rodriguez, when asked about the sequel, said that Avatar was like working on Star Wars, and she hoped Trudy could be in Avatar's sequel.[22]

In January 2011, James Cameron confirmed that most characters would return for Avatar 2, "Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form." [23]In a more recent interview, Sigourney Weaver further commented on returning for an Avatar sequel, stating that James Cameron has already told Weaver the stories for the second and third installments of the Avatar film series. Weaver also commented on her return after a supposed death in the first film, stating that, "Jim [Cameron] says no one ever dies in science fiction."[24]

In an interview in April 2012, producer Jon Landau said that Avatar 2 will be released in 2015 at the earliest. WETA is working out underwater performance capture for underwater scenes. On the underwater scenes, Landau said "It's going to be like the Floating Mountains in the first movie. It's not going to be all underwater; it's going to be a place we go to, leave and come back to."[25]
