The Dark Dreamer Project, initiated by RDA scientist Dr. Cordell Lovecraft, is known as the precursor to the Avatar program.

The project was designed for transmitting mental processes – “thoughts” – to humans at a distance. With the basis of the project in place, Lovecraft was ordered to apply the project to interspecies communication. And thus, the Avatar program was born.
