The First Home Video Release is the first ever home video edition of Avatar. 20th Century Fox released it as a 2D bare-bone edition on April 22, 2010.

Background[]

Initially, the home video was planned to be released on Tuesday, April 20. Various environmental and indigenous rights interest groups saw Avatar, with its themes based on modern environmental issues and the plight of indigenous people, as a means of catalyzing public interest about said issues. Because of this and an "emotional outpouring" from the public about the issues raised in the film, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron decided to release the edition on Earth Day to help promote the holiday. Cameron hoped that the Earth Day release would help contribute to continued discussion about Avatar's themes and action being taken towards the resolution of environmental and indigenous conflicts.[1]

Although the movie is supposed to be viewed in 3D, James Cameron argued his reason for not releasing a 3D edition initially: "There just aren’t that many players and screens yet. We have more of a long-term strategy, in that area."[2] Many people also asked why 20th Century Fox released the bare-bone edition without any additional content. Producer Jon Landau said that the choice was made because there was no original behind the scenes footage at the time which would not have been already available on the internet prior to this release. On the other hand, the studio couldn't wait until November because the market demanded the release 5 months after theatrical release.[3]

Additional content and two extended versions of the movie were released five months later as the Extended Collector's Edition.

Content[]

The DVD and Blu-ray load straight to the main menu and do not contain any commercials or trailers. This is done as part of unwritten deal between James Cameron and 20th Century Fox. James Cameron's movies that gross over $1 billion in box office is going to be free of commercials, trailers and other useless content in home video releases as a service to the viewer.[4] The release still contains the FBI warning (or other copyright warnings in international editions), MPAA rating screen and 20th Century Fox logo screen. The Blu-ray disc also contains a warning screen for updating Blu-ray player to the latest possible firmware.

Video[]

Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain the standard 2D theatrical version of the movie only. There is no 3D version included.

The movie was shot using digital cameras in a native capture ratio of 16:9. Although, James Cameron has long been a fan of Cinemascope 2.35:1 projection ratio, and composed Avatar to be safe for matting to this ratio, the movie is presented in this first release in a fully open-matte 16:9 (1.78:1) transfer. All 2D theatrical prints of the movie were projected at 2.35:1. For IMAX 3D projection, Cameron instructed to use a ratio of 1.85:1, because he felt that the taller image was more immersive in 3D especially on IMAX screens. Digital 3D theaters were distributed with copies in both aspect ratios and instructed to project whichever would be larger on their screens.

James Cameron stated in interviews in 2009 that 1.85:1 was his preferred aspect ratio for 3D and 2.35:1 for 2D.[5] Later, he changed his position on this issue saying: "Even though I love the cinemascope ratio compositionally, I actually found myself falling in love with the movie in 16:9, as we went along, and I prefer to watch it in that."[6] Cameron wanted to go with the full picture, as he really thinks it helps to enhance the sense of height. In certain sequences, small amounts of extra frames may give a sense of vertigo underneath the flying creatures, or when looking down over cliffs. The composition has also a few pitfalls like dead space around on-screen graphics in "Jake's diary entries" sequences, or in Na'vi dialogues when subtitles are positioned up high in the middle of the screen, much higher than subtitles are normally placed.[7]

DVD[]

The video has some problems with grain in a random way throughout the movie. Contrast, color vibrancy and richness is on high level for DVD, with solid blacks, bright whites and full mid-range.

Blu-ray[]

The videoideo is transferred to Blu-ray using MPEG-4/AVC with an average bitrate of 28.81Mbit/s (with peaks over 40Mbit/s) which takes 33GB of disc space. It has a very high bitrate and excellent transfer give the video a crystal clear quality with no hint for artifacts, interlacing, DNR (Digital Noise Reduction), EE (Edge Enhancement/Sharpening), compression flaws or any other anomalies. The colors are perfectly vibrant with contrast range giving solid blacks and excellent shadow detail. Many reviewers report the video quality as the best ever seen on Blu-ray to date, even besting its theatrical presentation, and highly recommended demo material on Blu-ray.[8]

Audio[]

The sound mix is very well balanced with a lot of dynamic range, sharp sound effects and a lot of details. Dialogues are always crisp and clear without being suppressed by sound effects when often surrounded by explosions, animals, and an orchestral score. The bass uses wide range but doesn't extends to the deepest registers. The mix has a lot of low-end rumble in many sequences like AMP suits.[9][10][11]

Red Warning Screen

DRM[]

The Blu-ray disc integrates a new kind of BD+ encryption system, mentioned to be called BD+5[12], which may cause slower disc load and compatibility issues. A number of users have reported compatibility issues as they were not able to play the disc on standalone Blu-ray players and ended up with a red message screen. Players from Samsung (BD-UP5000[13], BD-P1400[14], C6500 and C5500[15], BD-P1580[16]), LG, Sharp (BD-HP20U[17], BD-HP22U[18]), Denon (DVD-A1UDCI and DBP-4010[19]) and other manufacturers' models were reported for the requirement of new firmware. Problems with the new copy protection system were also reported when using desktop applications like Total Media Theater 3 or certain versions of PowerDVD 9 and 10 (Avatar plays from version 10.0.1601.51).[20]

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment erected, in co-operation with Beatwax agency, a giant interactive replica of the movie's Tree of Souls at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park, London (map). This visually spectacular exhibit was live for three days between April 24 and April 26, and was officially unveiled by Stephen Lang on April 24[43][44].

  • It is made up of 20 miles of fibre optic cable, making it the largest fibre optic installation in Europe.
  • To give the impression of being "alive", it has 10 movement sensors spread around the circumference of its trunk reacting independently in each area. The tree changes color, intensity of its fronds and pulsate the closer people get to or move away from the tree.
  • The tree has a local WiFi network that enables an access to a locally hosted website for WiFi enabled smartphones. The website offers content like wallpapers or exclusive sound bytes, and has a form to link with the Home Tree Initiative. Through the website, members of the public are be able to turn the tree to a specific color, chosen from a palette of hues.
  • A screen embedded in the tree's trunk displays the names of people who have had a tree planted.
  • A Bluetooth network allows people to upload messages and photos taken on camera equipped phones and display them on the embedded screen.
  • People may plug their phones or portable audio players, including iPods, to the tree and see the sound convert to variations of light.

Beatwax reported after the event that 1170 trees have been planted following the activity. In the UK, Fox has partnered with The Woodland Trust for the tree-planting initiative. The tree attracted over 80,000 visitors over the three days and hundreds of direct interactions with consumers. Stephen Lang has been interviewed at the tree by YouTube phenomenon Daveyboyz, MTV, Digital Spy and others.

Na'vi Morphing stations at LA's The Grove

Retail and entertainment complex The Grove in Los Angeles, California (map), co-sponsored by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Inwindow Outdoor, installed three Na'vi morphing stations on April 16th, 2010. The exhibit is a 60' x 10' (18.3 x 3 m) freestanding, decorated structure encircling the main statute at The Grove. Each morphing station transforms visitors into a Na'vi-like character in real-time as it features state-of-the-art facial recognition technology. Once their morphs are complete, visitors can enter their e-mail addresses to receive a video of the transformation, or buy a DVD. They also planned to bring the Na'vi machines to the CalTech campus in Pasadena on April 27[45][46].

Incidents[]

  • Mexico: In Mexico City's Alvaro Obregon district, an armed robber assaulted a truck driver of a delivery truck belonging to Technicolor Home Entertainment Services of Mexico. According to the report, the robber stole 3,409 DVD and Blu-ray copies of Avatar. The stolen cargo had a total value of 669,454 pesos (about $54,873)[47].

Achievements and Records[]

  • Avatar has become the most pre-ordered movie of all time outside of the US, with 136,000 copies ordered in Germany, 143,000 in Japan and 74,000 in France[48][49]. Roughly 60% of those are for Blu-ray[50].
  • In less than three weeks Avatar has become the best-selling title ever in a comparable period with 19.7 million sold copies worldwide. 6.2 million copies out of a total are for Blu-ray, which is 31%. Normally, Blu-ray represents 7-12%. Overseas, Avatar surpassed Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as the best-selling title since it launched on DVD. Disney's Finding Nemo currently holds the all-time record with approximately 40 million copies sold since November 2003 to date[51].
  • France: Consumers purchased 400,000[52][53] (some sources say even 500,000[54][55][56]) copies of DVD and Blu-ray on its initial day. Blu-ray took 100,000 copies out of a total. After first two days the number grew to 557,000 copies (136,000 for Blu-ray), besting previous record-holders The Chorus and Welcome to the Sticks and becoming the fastest-selling DVD ever[57][58]. First week was closed at 1 million copies of DVD and Blu-ray[59][60].
  • Germany and Austria: 450,000 copies were sold solely in Germany on its initial day on April 23, beating out Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which had dominated the charts in the country[61][62]. After first two days 700,000 copies were sold both in Germany and Austria (250,000 copies for Blu-ray out of a total)[63][64]. First week ended up with 1.1 million copies sold both in Germany and Austria, with 300,000 Blu-ray copies out of a total[65][66].
  • United Kingdom: After first 24 hours Avatar broke the Blu-ray sales record held by The Dark Knight. British consumers purchased 222,824 units of Blu-ray.[67]After first two weeks Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that Avatar became the biggest selling title on Blu-ray ever in the UK with 505,057 sold copies, and beating the all-time Blu-ray record of 490,633 copies held by The Dark Knight and breaking the half a million milestone as well[68].
  • United States and Canada: Early industry estimates set overall disc sales of Avatar comfortably north of 4 million copies and putting it well on track to become the year's top-selling release to date. Blu-ray disc sales took 40% of overall number, a total of 1.5 million copies[69]. 20th Century Fox later confirmed that 3.2 million copies were sold on its first day out (excluding rentals). That breaks down to 2 million DVD copies and 1.2 million Blu-ray copies. This easily beats the previous record set by The Dark Knight of 2.7 million copies (2.1 million copies of DVD and 600,000 copies of Blu-ray). However, it does not reach the combined DVD and VHS first-day record of Finding Nemo with 8 million copies[70]. 2nd day numbers (Friday) were close to 2 million copies, or 5.2 million copies after first two days[71][72]. This was enough to broke Summit/Universal's The Twilight Saga: New Moon record of 4 million copies. After four days, Avatar became the top-selling home entertainment title for year 2010. Consumers snapped up 6.7 million copies of the first Avatar home video release (2.7 million Blu-ray copies out of a total), which has quickly outpaced 6.5 million copies sold of Summit/Universal's The Twilight Saga: New Moon to date[73]. The Dark Knight even required 18 months to sell 2.5 million Blu-ray copies[74][75]. Earnings after first four days are over $130 million[76].
  • Avatar became also the most pirated movie ever. Report says that more than 200,000 downloads were done in four days. One of the influences for pirating were DRM issues with Blu-ray players that might have forced some people to download it though they bought it[77].
