The Goblin Thistle[3] (Na'vi name: koaktutra meaning "old person tree"), also known as the Grinch Tree, is one of many plants that grow on Pandora. Several of them grow in Valley of Mo'ara.

Grinch Tree

Known as the Grinch Tree in Avatar: The Game

Growing in a hunched shape and supported by prop roots and topped with passiflora, the stooped appearance of the Goblin Thistle is prevalent during the bioluminescence of the evening. Its leaves are a bluish color, and its trunk is twisted and a brownish-grayish color.

Fungal-like blooms along the trunk is similar to bacitracin and are a natural antibiotic balm or salve.[4] Na'vi harvest the blooms, dry them out, and use their radiant pigments for adornment on their banners and animal saddles.

  • They can be seen in the first film shortly after Jake Sully sees a prolemuris.
  • They can be seen in Avatar: The Way of Water; one appears in the opening just before Neytiri appears with her bow, as well as when Neteyam is learning how to aim.
  • They can also be seen in the Wii/PSP game.
  • James Cameron had to change the name of "Grinch Tree" into "Goblin Thistle", for legal reasons.[5] It is called the Grinch Tree in Avatar: The Game.
  • For unknown reasons, they have two different Na'vi names. One app called them "koaktutra" ("old person tree"), likely due to their hunched over appearance. The Na'vi Translator calls them "vozampasukut" ("thousand berry tree").
