Mel is a soldier in the RDA, working for Dr. Ossman. He and Lawrence lost an incredibly valuable machine when a banshee knocked it off their Samson during a flight across Greenhome. Ossman shouted at Lawrence for the loss, telling him that it was worth five times what he made in a year, and Mel joked about it. He, Lawrence and Ossman flew in above the Tawkami Hometree, only to have to flee when Nok destroyed their machines and defeated an AMP suit on top of their Dragon Assault Ship.
He later appeared in the Skycliffs, where he and Lawrence were using explosives to mine the floating rocks for unobtanium.
