History
Edit

Added by Matias AranaI'm JCameronfan123. I love movies, all types, but in particular Science-Fiction and Romance, despite being a guy. I grew up on films from great directors including James Cameron, Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas. I have always been a fanboy for something, whether it was when I was in elementary school and was into The Matrix Trilogy or Middle School for Frank Miller. I have always kept a tab for Cameron, loving his Terminator films and Titanic. I first heard about Avatar, it was still known as Project 880 back in 2005. I didn't know much of the plot except it was about a crippled soldier who gets his legs back on another planet. I thought Cameron was going to cast an old man based on my knowledge and I thought it sounded okay. It wasn't until around 2008 though when all the hype was building up around it, Sam Worthington's other big 2009 film, Terminator Salvation, and Zoe Saldana's other big science fiction film, Star Trek, when I really learned about it. My hype increased after watching the Teaser Trailer was released back in August 2009. I thought that it was strange, but amazing. When the 3.5 minute trailer was released, I knew where I was going to be the weekend of December 18, 2009. When I finally witnessed it in 3D on December 20, 2009, I was blown away and have never seen a film on the level of it. IT WAS A MASTERPIECE! AND MORE THAN A MOVIE! WOAH!
Reasons I love Avatar
Edit
I love Avatar a great deal. I loved every milosecond that I experienced four times in theaters, for the non special edition. I have sub genres for this reasoning though.
Characters
Edit
I loved every character in Avatar all of them were so facinating. My two favorite characters have got to be the obvious though, Jake and Neytiri. But after them it would be Parker Selfridge who is very close in how much I admire the character to the other two.
Jake Sully
Edit
Jake is a badass who is at times relatable for me. He's a guy who in a sense is sick of his miserable life on Earth and when is opened to the life on Pandora, he is captivated by the nature and all the cleanliness of it all. I love nature and go backpacking often to escape the life I have. I think that it's cool how Jake, the marine who doesn't have a clue about Na'vi lifestyle, is accepted into their culture before anyone else. I think that he's a good male role model because he is vulnerable and disadvantaged, but does not use that as an excuse to why people should listen to him. Unlike most leading men these days, Jake shows us that it is okay for men to and feel sad. He shows us that even men could follow their hearts and that Men could also feel just as much emotion as women. Jake is not a guy who gives up on people he cares about and loves and despite what anyone says, he is able to successfully despite all odds. Outstanding.
Added by FreakyTyNeytiri
Edit
Neytiri is simply hot. She is sexy in both her physical and inner beauty. She is so gorgeous. I love the fact that unlike with most of the leading ladies in films today, Neytiri actually does something. Neytiri is someone who you would have reason to fall in love with for many reasons. Her kindness, her beauty, her pureness or her strength and determination. Neytiri is reluctant to do tasks and is rebellious against her parents, but has reason for it. She isn't afraid to follow her heart and take on heavy risks when she mates with Jake. She understands the mistakes she may face and later does when mating with Jake. She isn't afraid to fight and be a warrior. Any other writer or director probably would have had Neytiri be either a lesbian or a useless rag. But in Avatar, I love how James Cameron makes Neytiri fierce and a warrior while having inner lady like features. Neytiri is a great character.
Norm Spellman
Edit
Norm is probably the character whom I relate to the most. He is tall skinny dork, like me. He comes off as gentile guy who is physically not a threat. He is very careful in his craft, just as I am. He cares for nature and the Na'vi people, and will fight for things and people who he cares about. And that's something special.
Dr. Grace Augestine
Edit
Grace is a hardass who has many layers, unlike most scientists depicted on screen today. She shows that people who have a hard outside could really be caring people in the inside. Also, she is a scientist throughout. When she is dying and in the Tree of Souls, she tells Jake, "I need some samples". Normally, a scientist in films would ignore the fact that they were in a highly bio genetic area, but Grace stays a scientist throughout and wants samples, despite dying! Brilliant.
Parker Selfridge
Edit
Giovanni Ribisi invents the best greedy businessman this side of Gordon Gecko with Parker. He is a corporate media slave who will do anything to avoid bad press. Parker has an incredibly smart mouth that results in some of the best one-liners I've heard in quite some time. I love the fact that at the film's core, Parker is the head villain and Quaritch is a pawn in his chess game. His finest moment occurs after Grace explains to him why what he did was wrong and he follows it up by saying, "What the Hell have you people been smoking down there?! They're just goddamn trees!" That line alone is such a great tense breaker and creepy at the same time. Damn! I feel that Giovanni Ribisi was just pitch perfect and should have been Oscar nominated, but you know how that is.
Col. Quartich
Edit
Like Quaritich, I love my coffee. But seriously, he was to me an amazing villain. Not on the same level as Parker, but I digress. When he walked on the screen, you feel a sense of terror that sent shivers to my spine. Every piece of dialogue he says is scary, even when he's calm it sounds intense. His finest moment is when he and Parker show a diary entry of Jake's in which Jake claims that the Na'vi would never give up their land. He then claims that he feels so happy, he might just give Jake a big fat wet kiss. Damn is that creepy!
Tsu'Tey
Edit
Tsu'Tey has really grown on me. I love how he is very anti-change and likes the way things were before Jake came into the picture. I respect that. He holds all emotions in, which is incredibly relatable, and they cause him to do and say things he doesn't actually mean to do. He is one of the more human Na'vi in the film. I like that a lot about him.
Love Story
Edit
Probably my favorite aspect of Avatar is the love story between Jake and Neytiri. James Cameron has a talent for writing love stories, with

Yeah, they're great. They create the world of Pandora and give you an abmersive experience. Not the best part of the film though.
I See You By Leona Lewis and James Horner
Edit
This is a song that I literally can't stop playing. Once it ends, I just replay it. It sums the best part of the film, the love story between Jake and Neytiri. It is in a sense told from both sides. And ends with them both talking to one another. James Horner is such a great composer and Leona Lewis has some voice. How this song didn't get an Oscar Nomination, I'll never know
Ending Scenes
Edit
I love the ending scenes of Avatar, the quieter moments after all the action is completed. I don't normally break tears in movies, but when Neytiri sees Jake's human body for the first time, I was getting teary eyed. It was so beautiful and powerful, I couldn't help it. Even on my repeated viewings and when I read about it on the Wikia page, that scene just gets me feeling something special. It shows love in its' finest moment. Here are two people madly in love with one another and this scene shows how much they really mean to one another. The chemistry within that silence alone is stronger than within an entire romantic comedy. Just look at the photo on the right. Neytiri can't help but let out so much emotion to Jake, despite the fact that he's human. Look in her eyes, you could tell that she's madly in love with him. You already know he's in love with her because if he wasn't then he would have just let Quaritch and the RDA kill her. This scene with only six words in it expressed more emotion and heart and love than the entire film Slumdog Millionaire. This scene is to me one of the great movie scenes of all time. I love the build up to the actual ending, after that perfect scene, when Jake talks about what happens to the RDA and aftermath of it all. I love it when he makes his final video log and tells the RDA or whoever is watching him on Earth that they will never see him again, to them, they'll never know what he meant but as the final shot reveals, he becomes Na'vi. I really love the final shot of when Jake gets the concious transfer and it succeds. At that moment I think I was cheering in my seat and wanted more movies. I loved how Cameron really proves that love can be so strong that even when someone looked strange they fell in love with the spirit above all. I loved the way Mo'at acts durring the transfer, treating him like a more than loved member of her actual family, after all he is her son-in-law, and that all past wrongs have been erased from her memory rather than treating him as the guy who her daughter mated with while being completely drunk. I loved how Neytiri kisses Jake's human body, proving that she loves him no matter what he looks like. She loves everything to do with him and that even if he were human, that wouldn't seice her feelings for him and she'll love him just as much as she would in his Na'vi form, and that's quite a bit of loving. Jake is the love of her life and nothing will ever destroy the love she holds for Jake and nothing will ever destroy his love for her. There is a spectacle alone! I loved it!
Added by Faern. My Response to people criticizing Avatar's Story
Edit
My response to all those who think Avatar was there just for special effects, were you in the theater watching Avatar, or did you accidentally go see 2012 instead? Avatar is a beautiful love story. And for those who hated the love stories, in the words of the mighty Paul Finch, "Here's a thought. Take a sack, put a pair of balls in it, and magically grow a d**k!"
For those who think that Avatar was the same as Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas, they all follow a formula, the only difference is that Avatar is, along with Last Samurai, the only film to make a good film out of that formula. Don't tell me that Dances with Wolves was amazing, tell me one thing great about that film. The acting was outstanding in Avatar, Kevin Costner has a voice that makes a normal human being fall asleep in an instant. Avatar had well developed an memorable characters, tell me one of those in Pocahontas? Also, Avatar brings something new to the formula and has something that its' predecessors doesn't. It's a love story and focuses on such. Granted Pocahontas is too, but really? There it's an 80 minute film and the characters fall within 10 minutes of meeting. Here, this 165 minute long epic has the characters grow and build up to their confession. Granted for Jake I think that it was love at first sight, but with Neytiri, she had had to warm up and then fall in love. Even with Jake, I think when he first sees Neytiri, it's just a "woah, this chick knows what she's doing!" and then as they get to know eachother over the course of the movie, they fall in love.
Analysis
Edit
There is a lot in Avatar that I've analyzed. Here is some of it.
Jake
Edit
Jake is a deep character with many more layers than one can expect. I divided him up into two categories
Personality
Edit
Jake came to Pandora as a warrior, but as he says early on "I always wanted something worth fighting for." Meaning, he never felt attached to anything, including his family back on Earth, although he shows sorrow for Tom when he sees him dead, but he breaks no tears hinting it wasn't much sorrow. When he is

Jake claims in the film that he didn't know who he was anymore. My question is was he ever human or was he always Na'vi? Jake led a warrior's lifestyle beforehand and when he learns to become one of the people, he realizes they weren't too different. Jake also loosens up in his Na'vi body, and like Dr. Augustine he stops caring about his human body. He tortures his human body by not eating nearly as much as he should be, while Grace is a chain smoker. By the end of the film, I think Jake did give up his Avatar body and permenantly became his true self by becoming a full Na'vi.
Jake and Neytiri's relationship
Edit
Jake and Neytiri's relationship is caused by Eywa. From the beginning of the film, long before either of them thought they were going to meet, Eywa had chosen them to be together. In his first line of dialogue, Jake says "When I was in the VA Hospital, I began having dreams of flying. I was free." Eywa had already known whom he was and his destiny was to come to Pandora. Durring Jake's first encounter with Pandora, a thanator chases him into a lake. It is at that point when Neytiri first sees him. When Neytiri first sees Jake, she is about to kill him, Eywa contacts her telling her that he's a pure soul and not to kill him. She then begins to follow him, watching over him to make sure she read the seed right. When she comes and saves Jake's life from the viperwolves, it is that moment when Jake gets a crush on her. Despite being rejected, Jake follows her until Eywa gives Neytiri a second sign by having the seeds land all over Jake. It is at that moment when Neytiri realizes he is not the normal Sky Person. When Mo'at assigns Neytiri to be his tutor, it is only fate for them to spend time together. Overtime, they truly do fall in love. When they mate, Eywa allows it to happen for a reason, to allow Neytiri to know he'll be on Pandora permenantly. When Neytiri gets furious and rejects Jake after thinking he's a traitor, Jake is forced now to prove to everyone, not just Neytiri but to his new found mother-in-law who was skeptic and to his tribe, that he is truly a Na'vi and to save Grace by becoming Toruk Makto. He returns to the Clan getting the answer he expected. When Grace dies, Jake uses his emotions to lead the Na'vi against the sky people. When Jake's human body is exposed to Pandoran air, Neytiri comes and saves his life. He says to her in the most emotion he's ever shown in his human body in the film, "I See You". She says it backs to him, crying in happiness and they embrace. This marks how strong their relationship is. Jake is only truly happy when he is with her, no matter what state he's in. And Neytiri loves Jake no matter what he is. The ending scene concludes by hinting that these two will live long happy lives together, sequel or no sequel. Avatar works as a stand alone film and if it does happen to be one, which I hope it won't because I love the characters, it would work as an amazing hero myth/fairy tale with a conclusion of and they live happily ever after. Eywa guided these two destined lovers together, and they overcame great obsticles to be together. That is beautiful.
Neytiri
Edit
Neytiri symbolizes a warrior woman whom initially acts as a guardian angel to Jake. When Jake gets lost in the woods, without knowing, she protects him and more soAvatar Stuff I have
