I've heard a lot of complaints about Avatar and young kids. Some such being that Grace smokes, everyone drinks, and the mating scene got too risque. But I don't see how people are complaining about it not being the right message to young viewers. The MPAA, for once, apropriately rated Avatar PG-13, because it wasn't for anyone, in my opinion, under 11 or 12. Now if the kid is able to handle the amount of violence, that's a different story. But for what it is I don't think that people should be complaining about the characters not being a good role model for young kids. It's not a film for young kids. It's meant for an older audience like all James Cameron films.
